Mailer Boxes vs. RSC Shipping Boxes: Which Should You Use?

Mailer boxes and regular slotted cartons (RSCs) both ship product safely, but they are built for different jobs. Picking the wrong one means either overpaying for a premium unbox nobody sees, or shipping a plain brown box when the moment called for a brand experience.

When the mailer box wins

If a customer opens the box — direct-to-consumer, subscription, beauty, apparel — the mailer earns its premium. The tuck assembly needs no tape, the interior prints edge to edge, and the reveal is photographable. That first open is marketing you already paid for.

When the RSC is the smarter buy

If the box is a shipping vessel that a warehouse or store opens, the RSC’s lower cost and stacking strength win. Save the print budget for where a buyer actually sees it. Many brands run both: RSCs for wholesale cases, mailers for the retail box inside.

Key takeaway

Match the box to who opens it. Customer opens it → mailer box. Warehouse opens it → RSC. When in doubt, run both and let the audience decide.
